Phytochemical Evaluation of Wild and Cultivated Pepper (Capsicum annuum L. and C. pubescens Ruiz & Pav.) from Oaxaca, Mexico Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Vera-Guzmán,Araceli Minerva; Chávez-Servia,José Luis; Carrillo-Rodríguez,José Cruz; G. López,Mercedes.
Reports of the last decade show that some types of food and spices included in the human diet, such as pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) can have a positive effect on human health. The Mexican pepper germplasm is poorly documented with regard to variety and the amount of phytochemical compounds that it contains. In the present study, the variation of phytochemical compounds was evaluated in nine fruit variants (morphotypes) of wild and cultivated pepper grown in Oaxaca. ANOVA detected significant differences among pepper morphotypes and ripeness stages of fruits; vitamin C, total phenols, flavonoids, P-carotene, coordinated chromatic of color, and capsaicinoids. The highest values of vitamin C were found in 'Tabaquero', 'Guero' and 'Costeño' morphotypes (151.6...

Pigmentos carotenoides del camarón Artemesia longinaris Bate (Crustacea, Decapoda, Penaeidae) OceanDocs
Carreto, J.I.; Carignan, M.O..
Caronetoids from caparace and internal organs of Artemesia longinaris were isolated and identified. The following carotenoid pigments were found in caparace: luteine, tunaxanthin diester, astaxanthin monoester and free astaxanthin. A much greater variety of pigments was isolated from internal organs: Ó- doradexanthin, a fucoxanthin derivate, chlorophylls degradation products and various xanthophylls in trace amounts. These pigments are of dietary origin. In the natural environment, A.longinaris takes preformed astaxanthin from the diet and transfers it to body tissues.

Strychalski,Janusz; Gugołek,Andrzej; Brym,Paweł; Antoszkiewicz,Zofia; Chwastowska-Siwiecka,Iwona.
ABSTRACT The study was carried out to evaluate the effect of AAT-deletion mutation at codon 248 of the BCO2 gene on the content of lutein, β-carotene, retinol, and α-tocopherol in the liver and fat of crossbred rabbits. The experimental animals comprised 90 rabbits, produced by reciprocal crossing between ins/del heterozygous parents of Flemish Giant, New Zealand Red, and Termond White breeds. All rabbits in the litter were genotyped, given the same diet, and finally slaughtered at 140 d of age. It was found that regardless of the mating scheme employed, all del/del homozygotes had the yellow fat trait, whereas heterozygous and homozygotes animals without the AAT deletion (ins/ins) developed white fat. Lutein concentration in fat was over 13-fold higher in...

Role of pH on antioxidants production by Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis BJM
Ismaiel,Mostafa Mahmoud Sami; El-Ayouty,Yassin Mahmoud; Piercey-Normore,Michele.
Abstract Algae can tolerate a broad range of growing conditions but extreme conditions may lead to the generation of highly dangerous reactive oxygen species (ROS), which may cause the deterioration of cell metabolism and damage cellular components. The antioxidants produced by algae alleviate the harmful effects of ROS. While the enhancement of antioxidant production in blue green algae under stress has been reported, the antioxidant response to changes in pH levels requires further investigation. This study presents the effect of pH changes on the antioxidant activity and productivity of the blue green alga Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis. The algal dry weight (DW) was greatly enhanced at pH 9.0. The highest content of chlorophyll a and carotenoids...

The influence of light intensity on anatomical structure and pigment contents of Tradescantia pallida (Rose) Hunt. cv. purpurea Boom (Commelinaceae) leaves BABT
Paiva,Élder Antonio Sousa; Isaias,Rosy Mary dos Santos; Vale,Fernando Henrique Aguiar; Queiroz,Cristina Generosa de Senna.
The aim of this work was to study the effects of five different light intensities on the anatomical structure and on the pigment contents in leaves of Tradescantia pallida cv. purpurea. Once light intensity became lower, the thickness of leaf lamina and mesophyll were reduced. Adjustments in light-harvesting antenna size were observed: an increase in chlorophyll a + b/carotenoids ratio at low-light growth conditions. There was a strong positive linear correlation between the light intensity values and anthocyanin contents. Hence, T. pallida cv. purpurea acclimation to distinct environmental conditions might be related to its capacity of altering structurally and physiologically its phenotype.

Баланс каротиноидов и a-токоферола мидий, культивируемых у берегов Крыма IBSS Repository
Поспелова, Н. В..
